Gemstones of North America (V. 3: Gemstones of the World
Series)
by John Sinkankas John Sinkankas was a very well known author on the subject of gemstones and also the lapidary treatment (cutting) of them. The book is based on Sinkankas' extensive research, correspondence with gem and mineral dealers, individuals actively engaged in mining operations, and his knowledge of the gemological literature. The 3 volumes of this set are probably the premier listing of gemstones found in America ever written - great descriptions and lots of detail. Volume 3 is in print and available, volumes 2 and 3 are sometimes available used. I own a copy of 2, and have a xeroxed copy of volume 1. Gemstone entries, both minerals and rocks, are listed alphabetically. Within each entry, the occurrences of each gemstone are mostly arranged in a geographical order from the northeast to the south and southwest parts of North America. I actually contributed some of the information he used in writing this third volume, so of course I recommend it! If you can get hold of copies of Volume I or II they are also well worth owning.
