The Indian Mountain mine is located high on the south slope of Bald
Mountain, about 14 miles SW of Cortez, and about 15 miles south and a little west of the
well-known Fox Turquoise Mine. The deposits here were discovered by a local Native
American Shepherd in the early 1970s. The location is at a high elevation, where snow blankets the ground much of the year, and the site is anything but hospitable. There is no water no electricity and 4 wheel drice only accesss. |
The workings at the Indian Mountain mine consist of open pit excavations, bulldozer cuts and similar surface scratchings. Because it was only discovered in the 1970s, there are no older or undergroud workings. |

The Indian Mountain mine is well known for the very fine deep
blue and spider web turquoise it produces. It does not produce huge quantities of
material, but what turquoise does come from here, is often of a very high grade. It is considered by many as one of the "classic" western turquoise locations, and has been featured in a number of publications. |
A gold mine lies to the west. and though it is not currently producing ore, the deposit does show the close physical location between many turquoise deposits and gold deposits in Nevada. |

At the present time, we are only re-working the old mine dumps, but so far this has produced sufficient turquoise to meet our needs. |
