Potosi Mine (Candelaria Area)
The beautiful Turquoise cabs listed below are all from the Potosi Gold-Silver mine near the old town site of Candelaria in Esmerelda County, Nevada. These stones are all natural and untreated gem quality American Turquoise. The Potosi mine was discovered in the 1870's and worked for its rich gold and silver ores for many years. There were a number of Mexican miners in the district in those early years and the mine was originally named after a famous silver mine in Mexico. During the late 1800s, the miners accidentally uncovered a small turquoise vein while looking for more gold and silver ore. As a result, the Potosi has produced a minor amount of of high quality turquoise - the Potosi is a rare and unusual source for this gem. These stones were taken from the underground workings of the Potosi. Candelaria is located about 50 miles W of the town of Tonopah. This is a very productive region and there are many different turquoise and variscite mines located here. All of the turquoise offered below is completely natural, high quality, un-baked gem turquoise that has not been treated, and does not need treatment.
