I am convinced you can produce really great content on a website that people would truly be interested in, only to have it go completely unnoticed because no one has ever heard of you before and you have no links or other exposure letting folks see your website. Acquiring that first exposure can be difficult, and article marketing is an important tool that can help you.
Personally, I think there is a lot of benefit to using article writing to market your website. Now, you can look at the opinions of a cross section of SEO experts, and you will find some that think article marketing has little value others say it can be pretty useful. This is because in many ways, SEO is as much of an art as a science. Article marketing is one part of my own SEO efforts, but only one part. I do other things as well. I think you will find it a worthwhile part of your efforts as well. Its not going to be much help for a site that is already highly ranked, but we are talking about gaining first exposure for your website or blog. Now right off the bat, I want to disclose that I’m not an SEO guru. Yes, I’ve studied it and I do know something about SEO, but my expertise is actually in generating great content.
I work for a magazine and write articles for print publication each month, but I also have a website with lots of info and I make some good money off it as well. While I am not quite ready to quit my job and work from home in my pajamas, I have had some great success with my website using article marketing, and I want to share some of the tricks I’ve learned with you.
The first benefit of article marketing is gaining links and the re-publishing of your article by other sources. Some article marketing sites use a “nofollow” tag so that no web juice flows back to your site. Be sure when select the sites where you will submit your work that you get the valid link that is the full credit to your site. There are lots of small article publishing sites that have little traffic and generate little benefit to you. I find it is pretty much a waste of time to use them. The big guys are generally the best places to put your articles – these include Ezine articles, Buzzle, Searchwarp, and a few others. Although it’s a bit different from a standard article site, Squidoo can be used in a similar manner. I also think that its better to submit your articles to a few article directories that to try and submit them to 10,000 little ones. My experience is that you will get far more traffic from one article on Ezine articles, that you will from submitting the same article to 10,000 little known article directories.
Articles are not re-published as much as they once were, so if you want to see the extra links that come from republishing, you’ll need a high quality article on a topic that people are interested in, one that will generate real interest. Now to get those significant effects and benefits of article writing, you will need to produce a good number of articles. How many is the right number? It’s hard to say, but you’ll probably need to generate at least a few dozen before you start to see some real traffic. Larger numbers of articles will help you generate larger amounts of web traffic. You’ll probably find, as I have, that some articles you think are very interesting and will attract loads of traffic generate only limited interest, and others you think will only be marginally successful will generate unexpectedly large amounts of traffic. Its often hard to say.
